David Rees 1942-1977
Received Golden Key Award
David C. Rees is no stranger to
adversity. He’s entered the arena of
combat with it many times – and won.
The Brigham City man will be one of 36
handicapped persons scheduled to receive the Golden Key award in Salt Lake City
on April 9.
The awards event, first of its kind, will be
staged at the Salt Palace beginning at 7:30 p.m.
…………………….
Rees who lived at 674 South Fifth West,
easily qualifies as an inspiration to others.
He has shown, on more than one occasion, that a physical handicap can be
overcome.
His first health setback came at the age of
nine when his left thumb was cut off in a wood chopping accident.
At the age of 12 he was diagnosed a diabetic.
While completing a mission for the LDS
church, he became ill and his illness almost forced him to return home.
At the age of 22 he contracted tuberculosis
which required hospitalization for several months. Upon being released from the hospital, and
the day before he was to return to his senior year of college, he was involved
in a tractor accident which necessitated his learning to walk all over again.
While recovering from this mishap, it was
discovered that Rees had glaucoma. It
became necessary to remove his left eye.
During the next year, the Brigham City man lost the sight in his right
eye.
Yet, despite these problems, he completed
requirements for a B.A. degree in sociology.
He has completed 28 hours toward a master’s degree.
Rees carpools from Brigham City to his job
with the Salt Lake Employment Security office every day.
He is active in church affairs.
He serves on the Brigham City Jaycees’ board
of directors and placed second in the Utah Jaycee speak-up contest.
Also active as a member of the local Lions
club, he has been elected third vice president for the new year.
The Golden Key honoree also has participated
in films for the blind and with the aid of his wife, Janeen, has opened his
home as a foster home to disadvantaged youth.

Doyle Reed Thorne 1942-1994
After Life Devoted To Saving Lives, Pilot Is
Laid to Rest
By Vince Horiuchi
The Salt Lake Tribune
“Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Doyle R. Thorne
probably would have shunned the kind of words used to describe him at his
funeral Saturday – descriptions like “master pilot” and, certainly, “hero”.
“But that is how the more than 500 people at
his service remembered the modest, quiet man who devoted his career to saving
lives.
“He wasn’t happy unless he was involved in
the service of other people”, said his nephew, Clay Jones. “That was Doyle – a quiet overachiever.”
“Thorne, a pilot in the UHP Aero Bureau, was
found dead Wednesday after his turbine-powered helicopter went down in steep
terrain last weekend in Wasatch County.
“The 19-year UHP veteran had been searching
for 2-year-old Sara Jane McCleve of Arizona minutes before his chopper
crashed. The girl had been found in good
condition, but Thorne was unable to pull the aircraft out of some trees on his
return home.
“The fatal accident occurred the day after he
attended the wedding of his daughter, Krista.
“Saturday, hundreds of law-enforcement
officers from all over the state crammed the Glenmoor LDS Stake Center in South
Jordan. All wore black bands across
their badges in memory of the downed trooper.
“The service also was attended by Gov. Mike
Leavitt, Utah Public Safety Commissioner Doug Bodrero, Utah Atty. Gen Jan
Graham, Salt Lake County Sheriff Aaron Kennard and Salt Lake City Police Chief
Ruben Ortega. The crowded Mormon church
had separate rooms that televised the service from the main chapel.
“Thorne always “worked hard and played hard,”
said his brother, Brent Thorne.
“He grew up on a Brigham City farm picking
cherries, tomatoes and corn, and thinning sugar beets or hauling hay.
“Thorne also was captain of the Box Elder
High School football team and was on the swimming team at Utah State
University. There he earned bachelor’s
and master’s degrees in human resources.
“At 240 pounds, Thorne “was strong both
physically and spiritually,” Jones said.
“During the Vietnam War, Thorne flew a
medical-evacuation helicopter and rescued wounded soldiers from dangerous war
zones.
“His unit always thought there was a halo
over his helicopter,” said his UHP supervisor and close friend Capt. Mike
Royce. “They knew he would get in and
get out when other pilots would have a ship go down.” He completed his tour with several
commendations for heroism.
“After six years in the Marines, the
52-year-old Brigham City native and his wife, Lucille, returned to Utah. He joined UHP in 1975. After stints in Kanab, Brigham City and
Vernal, he was transferred to the Aero Bureau, the department’s airplane and
helicopter division.
“Thorne, Royce and UHP Lt. Tom Rettberg
formed a trio of experienced pilots that flew missions to save lost hikers or
nab drug runners.
“No matter what it was, if there was an
emergency, he would do it,” Rettberg said about his friend of 19 years. “He loved his job.”
“But Thorne was the kind of man who shied
away from the spotlight, said his partners.
After scores of assignments where he saved fallen hikers or found lost
campers, he always allowed others to take the credit, Royce said.
“He was a very unpretentious person,” Royce
said. “He was working in a seemingly
prestigious position, but he didn’t take advantage of that.”
“Though Royce was Thorne’s supervisor, they,
along with Rettberg, saw each other as teammates who all loved to fly and help
people in distress.
“That last night, Thorne climbed into his
Hughes helicopter to look for Sara Jane in the rugged Wasatch mountains.
“And like a worrying mother, Royce told him
the same thing he tells his pilots every time they go up: “This is a tough assignment, go out… and
assess what you are able to do and not do.”
“Appreciating the attention, Thorne turned to
his friend, chuckled and said, “I know all of that stuff.”
“Then he waved goodbye.”

George Andrew Peterson 1942-2013
George
Andrew Peterson, 70, of Roy, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29,
2013 surrounded by his loving family at Peachtree Place Assisted Living after a
long struggle with Alzheimer's.
He
was born October 14, 1942 in Los Angeles, the second of seven children born to
Ivan S. and Doris M. Neville Peterson. He was raised and attended schools in
Brigham City, Utah graduating from Box Elder High School in 1960.
On
July 22, 1965, George married Gloria D, Howell in the Logan LDS Temple.
Together they raised a daughter and two sons, Rebecca, Todd, and Scott.
He
worked at Hill Air Force Base in the heavy equipment vehicle maintenance
department for 29 years, retiring in 1995. After retirement and because of his
passion for gardening and yard work he ran his own lawn care business up until
the time he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
George
was a man of few words and many talents, he was hardworking, and happiest when
he was tending his garden, working in the yard, or tinkering with cars in his
garage.
He
was affectionately dubbed "Man" by his eldest grandson, Blake, and
the nickname carried on through all the grandchildren. George never went anywhere
without meeting someone he knew; he was loved and respected by many.
George
is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gloria; their three children and spouses,
Rebecca (Michael) McKinney, Roy; G. Todd (Brandy) Peterson, Clinton; Scott
(Amanda) Peterson, Roy; 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, with two
more on the way; four sisters, Connie (Steve) Schultz, Clinton; Marlene (Lyle)

Marolyn.
Special
thanks to the staff of Peachtree Place and the staff of Curo Hospice,
especially his hospice nurses, Brittany and Laura, for all of their loving and
compassionate care.
The
Gates of Heaven opened and received another "Gardening" Angel. Our
Dad was a hardworking and generous man. His thumb was as green as emeralds and
his nails were black with grease from the neighborhood cars. Growing up we had
the greenest lawn and the best tomatoes and peas. All the neighborhood cars ran
like clockwork and if they didn’t, they were in our backyard garage on jack
stands being worked on after he worked eight hours at HAFB. Good-bye for now,
we love you Dad. Love, Becky, Todd, and Scott.
Funeral
services will be held Thursday, October 3rd at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Roy
Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South.

Kay Rasmussen Hall 1942-2017
Our sweet mother, wife,
sister and friend passed away Thursday, November 16, 2017 in Salt Lake City,
Utah. After a 10-year battle with T Cell
Lymphoma and its devastating effects on her heart and other organs, she
succumbed finally to heart failure. It
was a valiant effort full of strength, dignity and laughter. Kay was raised in Brigham City, graduating
from Box Elder High School in 1960. She
formed beautiful friendships there that endured through the years. She attended Utah Stat University where she
was an Alpha Chi Omega. It was there she
met Glade Hall; they were married in 1963 and moved to Bountiful to raise their
family. As a devoted mother, her time
was often spent at the schools with PTA, chauffeuring in the family van, and
creating fun filled memories.
She was an active member
of the community, involved in many volunteer organizations including the
start-up of the Bountiful Davis Art Center.
Her work at Cavanaugh’s gave her the opportunity to share her sweet
tooth with all; she gave a treat at every occasion. She also worked for Dr. Mike Thompson for
many years, loving the opportunity to help others.
Kay loved people. She so enjoyed gathering with her many
friends; Christmas parties, lunch or simply a Coke and a laugh. She truly cared about others, going out of
her way to make them feel special and extend a kind word or a hug. She especially looked forward to her visits
with her sister Cleo and brother Bob, whose relationships she so valued.
Her grandchildren were
the light of her life and she cherished everything they did, keeping each and
every memento and hand drawn card. Their
visits always brightened her day; they never left without an “I love you” and a
hug.
Her family would like to
thank Dr. Glen Bowen and all of the wonderful, caring staff at the Huntsman
Cancer Institute as well as the Heart Failure team at the University of Utah
Hospital. She was given the utmost care
and respect by all. Special thanks as
well to her many friends, cousins and in-laws who were so supportive to her

Floyd Stewart Tracy 1942- 2019
My sweet husband, Floyd Stewart Tracy, passed
away at his home in Hurricane, Utah, at the age of 77 on April 16, 2019.
Stewart was born March 3, 1942, in Brigham City, Utah, to Floyd Lindsay Tracy
and Roberta Rasmussen Tracy.
Stewart spent his early years in a little
town on the Utah/Idaho border called Yost. When he was 12, his family moved to Brigham
City, Utah, where he finished his school years. After high school, he went to
Weaver Airline School in Chicago. After finishing training in Chicago, he moved
to Phoenix. He worked for Bonanza Airlines, doing whatever involved flying. I
think flying was his first love. He loved to fly and was sorry to lose his
pilot’s license due to diabetes.
During his stay in Phoenix, he was drafted
into the Army and spent two years serving during the Vietnam War. Returning to
Phoenix, he met and married Judith Marie Omen. Two children were born to this
union, Kim Tracy of Bountiful, Utah, and Brad (Mardi) Tracy of Kaysville, Utah.
He also has two grandsons, Tyson and Mason Tracy. Stewart and his family later
moved to Las Vegas, and then to Bountiful, Utah. Stewart worked as an air
traffic controller in the weather division and retired in 1995 from the
facility in Cedar City, Utah.
Stewart met and married me, Vickie Fullmer,
from Burley, Idaho, in 1989, and we were sealed in the St. George LDS temple in
1993. Stewart and I have lived in Cedar City, Utah, Paragonah, Utah, Preston,
Idaho, and finally, Hurricane, Utah. Stewart said we are going far enough
south, so we won’t have to shovel snow, and Hurricane became our home.
Stewart has struggled with many health issues
these past 11 years. He always tried to remain pleasant through them all. I
will miss him terribly, and love him dearly, but we will be together again.
Stewart knew our heavenly Father loved him, and he knew the gospel to be true.
Stewart chose not to have a service, he was
kind of a private person, and he didn’t like people making a fuss over him.
I would like to thank the many medical
providers who have taken such good care of my sweetheart all these years. Their
service is truly appreciated.
Fly high my
angel, till we meet again.

Ronald Dee Burt 1942-2020
On Monday, March 9,
2020, Ronald Dee Burt returned to his heavenly home. He was preceded in death
by his father, Ted Wight Burt, his mother, Marjorie Graser Burt and his sister
Janet Burt Pease. He is survived by his wife; Lynn Suzanne Roth Burt; his
sister, Patty (Terry) Rosvall; his six children, Kristin (Todd) Bradfield, Ryan
(Vickie) Burt, Kimberly (Brian) Baker, Patrick (Sienna) Burt, Kevin (Melissa)
Burt and Peter (Elise) Burt; and 18 grandchildren.
“Ron held many titles and positions during his
life. He was a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
in London, England. He was a student and graduate of Utah State University (BS
in Dairy Science) and University of Wisconsin (MS in Genetics). He served his
country as an Air Force pilot during the Vietnam War (Captain) He was a
provider working on his dad’s dairy farm, as an LDS seminary teacher and an
over the road truck driver. He helped in his church wards through the years as Gospel
Doctrine teacher, 1st counselor in a bishopric, Young Men’s President and as a
worker in the Brigham City temple.
The
title and position that meant the most (and will most especially be missed) is
that of husband, father and “Poppa.” Ron and Lynn were married on August 10,
1967 in the Oakland, California LDS temple. He was an essential and loving part
of memories of great and minor importance. From supporting and encouraging all
of his children through various milestones (missions, college, marriages and
becoming parents themselves) to sharing traditions through the changing of the
generations. As easily as his children can remember family reunions with
extended family at, what is affectionately known as The Ranch, so can most of
his grandchildren recall the same experience - from fishing (and catching each
other with hooks more than fish) to tractor rides and nights by the campfire.
Family
vacations and day trips were a part of his life. How many times he would ride a
roller coaster at Lagoon, whether he wanted to or not! When his children were
old enough to ride on their own, he constantly waved, possibly secretly
relieved to be past the stage of needing to participate in the rocket speed and
loops of rides. Perhaps he felt the same dizziness when he took his young
teenage daughters to their first rock concert or his sons deep sea fishing.
In
addition to family and fun, Ron and Lynn provided a spiritual foundation for
their children with regular Family Home Evenings, prayers, father/child councils,
and back to school blessings. Though this ability to communicate was severely
damaged when Ron suffered a stroke in June of 2013, his love was still known.
“His family and friends will say their earthly
good-byes at Myers Funeral Home in Brigham City on Saturday, March 14th. The
funeral services will be at 3:00pm. Ron will be laid to rest in the Corinne
cemetery. The family unites in expressing their appreciation for the outpouring
of love and condolences.

Dorr William Hanson Jr. 1942-2020
SPRING GLEN-Dorr
William Hanson Jr. passed away peacefully on February 29, 2020 in the presence
of his loved ones due to complications associated with an aggressive form of
pancreatic cancer at the age of 77.
Dorr was
born on June 10, 1942 in Price, UT to Dorr Williams Hanson Sr. and Mary
Elizabeth Mathis. He was the eldest of eight children, and as a great older
brother, led them on many adventures. His childhood was spent in Kenilworth, UT
where he grew to love the amazing views of Carbon County.
He
attended Carbon High school but graduated from Box Elder High in 1960. He
served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the
Edinburgh, Scotland Mission.
He
courted his love Dana Guymon after meeting her while working on a float for the
Huntington Heritage Days parade. They were married in April of 1968 in the
Manti Temple. Dorr graduated from BYU with a bachelor's degree in Zoology that
same spring and then went on to attend the University of Nebraska where he
received his DDS degree.
Dorr
returned to Carbon County and opened a successful dental practice in Helper. He
and Dana moved to Kenilworth and later made their home in Spring Glen where
they raised their six children.
Dorr practiced as a general dentist from the
summer of 1974 until the day of his diagnosis on February 5, 2020. He truly
enjoyed his patients and his profession and loved the daily interaction with
the people amongst whom he worked and served.
He
served in various positions of leadership in the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, including Scoutmaster, High Councilor, Bishop, and a
counselor in the Helper Utah Stake Presidency. He was recently awarded the On
My Honor Award which is the highest recognition given by his church for
scouting.
While he
had a deep faith and commitment to his beliefs, Dorr welcomed and befriended
people from all walks of life. He will always be remembered for his kindness and
Christ-like love for everyone. The breadth and depth of his generous acts will
not be known publicly because he never wanted recognition for them. He truly
was a hero to all.
One of
his favorite hobbies was his large garden and small orchard, the produce from
which he shared generously. He was affectionately nicknamed "The Zucchini
Bandit," leaving vegetables on his neighbors' doorsteps late at night. He
loved the San Rafael desert and the mountains of both Emery and Carbon County.
Dorr enjoyed the outdoors and had many hunting, camping, hiking, and fishing
adventures with his family. He had a talent for playing the piano and organ and
appreciated the views of the night sky through a telescope. He also had a keen
wit and sense of humor, creating sayings and phrases which made one double over
in laughter.
Dorr's
greatest legacy is the love of his children, wife, siblings, grandchildren, and
many good friends.
He is
survived by his dear wife Dana; children, Eric (Andrea) Hanson, Justin (Tosha)
Hanson, Nathan (Brianne) Hanson, Leisha (Clemont) Adams, Sarah (Jason) Rott,
Brian (Jacquelyn) Hanson; sisters, Karla, Colleen, Leslie; brothers, Loel,
